How to Change the Anchor Text for a Menu Link in WordPress

When you click a link on a Web page, then text that you actually click on is called “anchor text.” In a WordPress menu, any link that you create from a page or category will use the default title of that page as its anchor text. This is fine in many cases, but you may discover that certain anchor text would be more effective if it said something different.

Fortunately you can change the anchor text in a WordPress menu link without also changing the title of the page or category to which that link points. Our guide below will show you how to make this edit to an existing menu on your WordPress site.

Change the Anchor Text for a Navigational Menu Link on a WordPress Site

The steps below will assume that you have already created a menu for your site, and that you wish to change the anchor text for one of the links in that menu. If you have yet to create a menu, this article will show you how to create a new WordPress menu.

Step 1: Open the admin section of your WordPress site.

Step 2: Hover over Appearance in the left menu, then click the Menus option.

Step 3: Click the drop-down menu to the right of Select a menu to edit, choose the menu containing the link that you wish to modify, then click the Select button.

Step 4: Click the existing link that you wish to modify, delete the existing text in the Navigation label field, enter the desired new anchor text, then click the Save Menu button.

You may have noticed that one of the menus in this tutorial was labeled as “AMP Menu.” Learn more about adding AMP functionality to your WordPress site, as well as how to create an AMP-specific menu.
