How to Change or Refresh Permalinks in WordPress

The Permalinks setting for your WordPress site determine the structure of the URLs for your pages. There are several options available, ranging from structures that include the date and post number, to simpler options that only use the title of a post.

You can change the permalink settings for your website if you don’t like the way that your URLs look. Adjusting this setting will update all of the permalinks for existing posts on your site, as well as future posts that you create. So continue reading below to see how to change your WordPress permalink settings.

How to Modify the Permalinks Settings in WordPress

The following steps will show you how to adjust the Permalinks settings for your WordPress site. Note that there is no “correct” setting for a WordPress permalink structure. The option that you choose will be determined by the type of site that you run and your own preferences.

Some plugins and troubleshooting guides might tell you to “refresh your permalinks” if there is something that should be working, but isn’t. You can refresh your permalinks simply by clicking the Save Changes button at the bottom of the Permalinks menu. The steps below will show you where to find, and how to change Permalink settings.

Step 1: Navigate to the admin section of your WordPress site.

Step 2: Hover over Settings in the left column, then click the Permalinks option.

Step 3: Select one of the default permalink options under the Common Settings section. I have selected the Post Name option in the image below, which will result in a URL structure for posts that looks like this:

You can click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the menu when you are finished.
