The Accelerated Mobile Project (AMP) from Google is intended to provide Web users with a fast browsing experience on their mobile devices. Currently, sites that have AMP functionality receive a small indicator next to their listings in mobile search results, and users are treated to a very speedy browsing experience if they open an AMP page on their phones.
AMP is still relatively new, but it is one of the most popular discussion topics among webmasters, and everyone is clamoring to implement AMP capabilities on their site, since Google seems to be pushing it pretty hard.
As is the case with most big changes that become available for WordPress sites, there is a plugin that can help you implement AMP. Technically we are going to use two plugins to do this, as one of the plugins is going to provide some additional functionality, such as the ability to insert ads into your AMP pages.
Step 1: Navigate to the admin section of the site that you would like to upgrade to AMP.
Step 2: Hover over Plugins in the left column, then click the Add New option.
Step 3: Type “amp” into the search field, click the Install Now button for the AMP plugin from Automattic, then click the Activate button to activate the plugin.
Step 4: Hover over Plugins in the left column again, click Add New again, type “amp for wp – accelerated mobile pages” into the search field, then click the Install Now button for the plugin from Admed Kaludi and Mohammed Kaludi. Click the Activate button when it has finished installing.
Step 5: Hover over AMP in the left column, then click the Welcome option.
Step 6: Click the General tab on the plugin’s main menu, where you can add information such as your logo and analytics ID. You can click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen when you are done.
Step 7 (optional): Continue customizing your AMP installation as needed. You will probably want to add a menu, so click the AMP Menu tab, then click the link on that page to be taken to the WordPress Menus screen.
