How to Create a New Tag in WordPress

There are different ways to organize your posts in WordPress and make them more accessible to your visitors. Typically these involve categories and tags.

If you elect to start using tags on your site, you may have an idea of the ones that you want to use before you start writing your posts. In that case, you will need to know how to create them. Our guide below will show you how to create a new tag on your WordPress site.

How to Add a Tag in WordPress

The steps in this article were performed in the 5.1.1 version of WordPress, but are similar in earlier versions of WordPress as well.

Step 1: Sign into the admin section of your site at (yourdomain.com)/wp-admin.

Step 2: Hover over the Posts tab, then click that Tags option.

Step 3: Type a name for the tag into the Name field, then add a description for it to the Description field. You can also elect to create a custom slug for the tag (this is what its URL will be) but WordPress will define one on its own that is usually just the name of the tag. When you’re done, click the Add New Tag button.

You can then add one of these tags when creating a new post by typing it into the Tag field at the right side of the window, then selecting it from the list of results.

Note that you can also use this field to create new tags as well. Simply type the new tag into the field and press Enter. This new tag will automatically be created.

You can also create new post categories in WordPress using a similar method.
